Did Someone Say More Pillows? This Time with Piping!

Earlier in the week I shared with you my previous hesitation to sew pillow covers and how I couldn't figure out why I waited so long.  Turns out it is easy and fun!  In this season of life with three mischievous inquisitive little loves I need projects I can finish quickly, like my recent Valentine's patchwork pillow.  Like so many crafters, I get on "kicks" (some might say obsessions), and true to form, our home may soon be overflowing with pillows...

Such as this little guy

What can I say, the whimsical fabric called my name while I was busy browsing Pink Castle Fabrics in search of my inspiration fabric.  It is Stacked Chairs in Celebration from Robert Kaufman's collection Perfectly Perched by designer Laurie Wisbrun.

In my early days of home ownership with a quest to have a grown-up house, I worked too hard to be matchy-matchy or fit a certain mold.  Lately I've been on a journey (with very little budget and even less time!) to make our home a better reflection of us.  Our homes should be an extension of who we are and I want to be a woman who extends hospitality to guests and to my own family.   Our home should be filled with pieces that make us smile and make my loved ones comfortable.  I'm guessing this pillow passed the test as I found Big Brother and Sister laughing and having a pillow fight with both of the pillows I made this weekend!

I was inspired by Edie Wadsworth, author of Life in Grace blog, who was recently featured in BHG, where she shares her design philosophy, "I don't follow decorating rules. I don't even know them. If I love something, then I'll find a place for it in my house.  Life is too short to follow the rules."  So, when I saw this fabric, I just knew it needed a new life as a humble pillow in my home.

The pillow cover is a basic envelope style cover (this is what the back should look like) for a 12 by 12 inch pillow form.  If you need help with the basics or knowing what dimensions to cut your front and back, visit this helpful tutorial.

Using an excellent tutorial from Sew, Mama, Sew!  I learned how to make piping and add it to the pillow's edge for a more finished look.  Don't be scared...it's actually easy!

One quick piece of advice...make sure you sew the piping to the right side of the front piece.  Not that I would know what happens if you sew it to the wrong side...Ahem, moving on...

If you've never tried to make a pillow before, I hope you'll give it a go.  It's so fun and so much more affordable than purchasing one.

What's your favorite type of pillow cover to make?  Any piece of decor in your home you had to buy simply because it made you smile?

Happy Creating!

  1. LOVE the fabric and the piping just finishes it off perfectly, Jessica. I do like the 'no rules' quote!!! I make my cushions with an envelope back like you have.

  6. Wadsworth's words are wise ones (whoah, alliteration much?). And I think I, too, have felt that pressure to get really matchy matchy in our house, but that's not what makes a home a home is it? A lot of it is intangible...a welcoming atmosphere...space for fellowship...invitations to linger. Well, that pillow you created is definitely going to make your home more homey - - I love it! The colors, the piping, the pattern...all of it. You are on a roll, girl! Keep those quick sewing projects coming. I need to get back on my machine and churn out some myself. Pinning!

  8. Good Evening Jessica, I do not know of Edi Wadsworth, but I agree with the philosophy of not following decorating rules. My home is very eclectic and filled with items that my husband and I love. We remember where everything came from....and I have to say nothing is precious. We want friends and family to come over and feel comfortable and relaxed. My favourite item which makes me smile is an old Indian painted chest....it is a little battered, but beautiful. I have enjoyed reading your blog and have become your newest follower. Sending you best wishes from England, Daphne

    1. Thanks Jenna! You can't have too many pillows, right? Especially since most of ours seem to end up in various pillow fights!

  11. Great pillow. I haven't tried the envelope style or piping, but I think I will have to now with the tutorials. I had a bit of a pillow phase this summer until my kids complained that it was hard to sit on the couch because of all the pillows, but they were summery so I think it's time for something a little more wintery...

    Love the fabric!
