Not quite sure how this jumble came out of such an amazing organization system:
Oh, now I remember! It was a combination of my very busy children and this highly ineffective organizing tool. While I am far from being an expert in organization (my home can not tell a lie), I have learned as our family evolves that our organizing must also evolve.
My beautiful daughter with the wild curly hair needs a hair accessory to help tame her tresses, but we are usually rushing out the door in the morning to get to school. The product of our rushing is the mess you saw above. Enter the DIY Hairbow Holder!
The idea came to me one night when the aforementioned tornadoes decided to hide a framed picture in their hideout (behind a recliner) and shattered the glass on the frame. Fortunately no one was injured, unless you count the poor frame. Rather than discarding the glass-less frame I saved it for a future life as a new creation.
The fabric came from a thrift store sometime last year when I bought 1 & 1/2 yards for $1, and the elastic was leftover from a skirt I made for my daughter last year. I chose to use this fabric because I thought the colors would coordinate nicely with the quilts in my children's shared bedroom Since I made this hairbow holder from items I had at home, it cost me nothing out of pocket.
If you have visited my blog before, you probably know about my passion for adhering lovely fabric to various repurposed items with spray adhesive. Sadly I ran out of spray adhesive at the time of this undertaking, so a stapler took its place. Follow these easy steps and you can make a hairbow holder of your own with whatever method for attaching fabric your little heart desires.
- Press the fabric to get it nice and smooth.
- Remove the cardboard from the frame (or cut some scrap cardboard to fit if needed) and stretch your pressed fabric over it to see how much you need.
- Cut fabric to fit the cardboard with a 1 inch allowance or more on all 4 sides.
- Smooth fabric out over cardboard and wrap around to the back. Adhere the fabric on each side. I used a stapler.
- Use elastic to lay out whatever pattern you want for the bow holder. I did a K with 1" elastic for my daughter's initial and used 1/2" elastic in vertical lines for the smaller bows. Just play around with it as some letters won't work as well.
- Stretch the elastic so that it is somewhat taut and then staple or otherwise adhere to the back of the cardboard.
- Insert fabric and elastic covered cardboard and secure in frame.
- Add hairbows!
Hope you have fun making your own hairbow holders. If you decide to make one, please send me a picture or a link to your blog in the comments. I always love seeing your creations!

How do you organize the multitude of hair accessories for yourself or the special little ones in your life? (I may need a Plan B if the tornadoes strike again on this project!)
Happy Creating!

Thanks for stopping by, Carol!
Deleteso cute!! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks! Does baby girl need one yet?
DeleteNice work! This looks great!
ReplyDeleteHi Elise,
DeleteThanks for stopping by. It was fun to make!
You did a really good job on the hair bow organizer. I'm sure it will be a big help to you and the girls. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteHi Lynn, thanks! I'm sure they will still find a way to make a mess, but at least we have a pretty solution for now.
DeleteI need this! I mean really really need this. We are going to make this for my youngest daughters room. She has so many hair bows and they get lost all over the place, this is the answer to my madness. Thanks so much for sharing on We Made That!
ReplyDeleteHey Tracey,
DeleteIt might help with the madness, but I'm sure they'll find another way to make a mess :)
I posted our hairbow holder today on the blog. I wanted to thank you again for being so creative and coming up with this idea. It is awesome and you are awesome for thinking of it!
DeleteI'm so glad it was helpful to you! Can't wait to see what you created....I'm on my way.
DeleteThis is genius! I spent about 15 minutes this morning digging through a box of my daughter's hair bows trying to find the one I wanted.
ReplyDeleteI host a link party each Thursday and would love for you to share this.
Thanks for the great post!

Hi Angie,
DeleteThanks! It's amazing how the little things can make a big difference. Now, if only I could figure out the perfect DIY Lego storage! Thanks for the invite. I will swing by your party tomorrow.
Very clever! I love how you found a creative use for that frame after it suffered its injury (poor thing). And I'm sure your daughter is so much more likely to wear those hair accessories now that they're so beautifully on display. Now, I just need to come up with an organization system for all of my headbands.... ;-)
ReplyDelete-Lauren
If you come up with one, let me know. Headbands are my next project! I just cut off 10 inches of hair to donate to Locks of Love, so I'm still figuring out what to do with my hair in addition to my girl's wild mess which means lots of accessories!
DeleteHi Nicole! Stopping by from http://favemom.com/ :) I found you on I Gotta Create!
ReplyDeleteI love how you did the letter! I've never seen that before!
Thanks for stopping by Nicole! Yes, I was lucky "K" worked out nicely; some letters wouldn't. I'm going to swing by your site and pay you a visit now!
DeleteThis is SO cute! My little girl doesn't have enough hair for bows yet, but I'll keep this in mind when she does! Thanks for stopping by my blog earlier!!

Haha! Your little tornados are sure to love this approach! Makes a nice display. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for partying with the Wildly Original Crowd.
