Valentine Patchwork Pillow

What do you do when you have a stash of fabric and no room to store it?  Start making pillow covers!

I bought this Valentine charm pack from Moda Fabrics years ago and pieced the 5" squares together.  In case you're not familiar with a charm pack, it's a collection of precut 5 inch squares from a particular fabric line, usually cut with a pinked edge to prevent unraveling.  I find charm packs are a great way to include a whole fabric line when you just can't decide which ones are your favorites!

The pieced squares then just sat in my closet waiting for life as a new creation.  Do you sense a theme here of previously unfinished projects being revived in this house?  When I realized there was not enough fabric to make a sizable quilt, I decided to make it into a 14 inch by 14 inch pillow cover.

This pillow cover was my first to make and I don't know why I waited so long.  They are easy and quick projects!  I used the envelope style pillow cover and because the patchwork was already complete, I had the pillow finished in 10 minutes.  I also used a backing fabric from my stash that I purchased at a garage sale years ago.  The pillow form was purchased from Jo-Ann Fabrics with a coupon for $8, bringing my current out of pocket total for this project to $8.

For a great table of common pillow form sizes and the corresponding measurements for front and back pieces, go check out Sew, Mama, Sew!  The linked post also provides a tutorial for making the basic pillow cover if you need help getting started.

What's your favorite way to use up fabrics when you need to lessen your stash?

Happy Creating!

  8. This is a beautiful pillow and you would not know it was your first. You did a terrific job! I can SOO identify with the fabric stash and with the unfinished projects. My fabric stash is more like an avalanche and I now call those unfinished projects "works in progress." More times than not, I generally do get them finished, but I tend to work on one for a while, then start another, then at some point go back and finish the first one. That is just the way my mind works. It drives my husband crazy sometimes.

  16. 10 minutes?! $8 bucks?! Amazing. And I love how you gave an old project a new life...and it turned out great! I don't know why I haven't yet tried making any pillows yet. They seem so simple and yet pack a punch to add a splash of color or vibrancy to a room. Thanks for the inspiration.
