Don't Forget Your Hard Hat: Construction Site

Hospitality: what is it?  I've shared with you before that it is of great importance to me, but what does it look like?  My favorite definition describes hospitality as the relationship between the guest and the host, portrayed as kindness and receptiveness in welcoming guests, strangers, and visitors, making them feel valued.  What really attracts my attention in reading about hospitality is the lack of phrases such as "perfect home", "no little fingerprints on the windows", "expensive gourmet meal", or "all toys hidden from sight".

The reality is many of us put pressure on ourselves to be perfect at entertaining, when what guests really desire is special time with you, their host, in a home that is welcoming, comfortable, and a reflection of who you are.  Now on certain days if you were to drop by my home, it might reflect that I'm disorganized and a tad chaotic (I maintain that is a reflection of the other 4 people abiding in this home!  That's my story and I'm sticking to it.)  But once you kick the toys out of the way and see past whatever project is in progress, I hope you will find my home reflecting back my true loves: my Jesus, my family, my friends, and my desire that our home be a place of refuge and comfort to all who pass through its doors.

My home isn't "finished" and it isn't perfect and it isn't as organized as I would like, but it is full of love, joy, forgiveness, grace, and creativity.  Most of you will never walk through the doors of my home, so this blog is my opportunity to truly extend hospitality to each of you.  For this reason, I am doing a little remodeling right now.  It's a whole lot cheaper and a whole lot less messy than remodeling my home, but I feel it is just as important.  So please bear with me as I make some cosmetic and content adjustments around this little piece of the web I call A Humble Creation.

I'm trying out some new looks that reflect me better.  I like uncluttered pages, soothing colors, and minimal "stuff", so I'm giving it a try.  Feel free to let me know what you think about the new look; after all, I want you to feel welcome and invited.

You may also see some minor changes in content around here to better reflect who I am and who I want to be.  Don't worry!  If you love my crazy projects, half-finished quilts, and crafts that sometimes don't go as planned, never fear...they will still be here.  This blog started as a place to share creative projects.  Yes, period...I seemed to forget that I am a whole person, not just a sporadic source of crafting ideas and projects.  I've realized, for me, a blog is better when you see the whole person.  My remodel will include more of me, more of my faith, maybe a little more of my family, and definitely more of life, but it's still a home for all things creative!

I will also continue my Monday link party (open starting Sunday night), but I'm renaming it to A New Creation, which is a better reflection of who I am as well, for I am a new creation in Christ.  Please continue to link up all your creative projects and feel free to grab my new button.

I hope you will continue to feel welcome to a place of comfort, rest, inspiration, kindness and love.  Thanks for joining me in this process!

  5. We all need a change every so often. Good for you!!! I smiled when I read the part about if someone were to walk in on some days they would think you "disorganized and a tad chaotic...". Uh, let me tell you, although I think you already know: It's like that at everybody's house!!! Even the people who can afford household help on a daily basis!!! (Boy, do I wish I was one of those people!!!) :-) It has been said that "Home is where the heart is", and so long as your home, like a heart, continues to pulsate that life blood that's so important to happy life, happy family....toys in the hall or dishes in the sink don't matter!!! Have a good week!

    1. Alyica, thanks for the wonderful sentiments. It's so important for us to stay focused on what's important, but also so easy to get hung up on the details, isn't it?

If I could afford daily household help, I'd play all day long...my kids would probably eventually want me to do housework so they could have a break!

  6. I have often felt that pressure when it comes to entertaining...and hate the idea of folks dropping by when the house is messy. But Mark has reassured me that our friends and family who love us, love us for US and not our clean house. You're so right that hospitality is often a state of mind and less of a state of order. I need to remind myself of that.

Your new minimalist look to your blog is SO lovely. The word "soothing" keeps coming to mind every time I visit. And I'm looking forward to seeing how your content shifts and changes to include more of YOU, Jessica. I am such a huge fan of YOU, so I say, bring it on!

    Hugs,
    Lauren

    1. Your Mark is a smart guy! I have to remind myself of that too and also to not make excuses for my home when people do drop by. It is what it is and they are still welcome, right?!

Thanks for your supportive words of encouragement. I was definitely going for soothing, so I'm so glad it has felt that way to you, my friend! You should be a professional motivational cheerleader because your little pep rally for me just made my day! Hugs right back to you!
